These are words of praise for AppleTalk, the most awesome obsolete networking protocol ever. Service autodiscovery via network broadcasts and human-readable names? Let me in on this. The whole design is less fucked up (First-level encoding? what the hell made you think that was a good idea? EOGFGLGPCACACACACACACACACACACACA?!!?!?!), as well as friendlier to humans. The horrible latencies between a share being added and accessible that I've always run into just aren't there. Imagine if the internet were routed by AppleTalk. A whole coherent package as opposed to the hodgepodge of TCP/IP with DNS and UDP and HGLAHLAGHALH.
