Academic diatribe | |
I suppose it's time that I dispensed some textual whoopass. There's been a lot of silly nonsense on ROY lately, but not that much serious nonsense.
And we are not entirelyabout silly nonsense. Just mostly. Now, what to rant about... there are so many topics.. - how brocolli looks too much like cortical tissue for me to eat it - how feminists need to kindly cram it - why current drug laws make less sense than a midget playing for the Bulls - why creationism should be treated as a chronic disability - - how modern synthesizer companies are so retarded they don't even sell a modular - Modern college gripes - How Moby still has all my left Yes, that will do nicely. College gripes, I mean. As to how I am familiar with college, for the purposes of anonyminity, I will say not. I could have graduated years ago, I could be in grad school, I could be an undergrad, I could be a professor. Suffice to say, I have plenty of experience with facilities of higher learning. First item on the stack (a FIFO stack, conveniently): Worldly ignorant asshats recently out of high school. As a great man (me) will say a few letters from now, unless you come from a particularly special high school, your acheivements once you hit freshman undergrad mean exactly jack. Yes. Your acheivements mean jack. Your psych class was rudimentary BS; you can't write analytical papers for shit. Most of the people on the football team got into the school for football, too, and are just as good, if not far better than you. This is not your fault. You did your best, and probably even acted admirably under the conditions - but the sad fact is that the average public high school is not fit to teach a rutabaga how to rot. Like the olfactory measures of French armpits, public schools register "Hooo-MAMA!" on the patented, hyper-accurate, RTQP Stink-o-meter. And I never lie (especially about hat factories in my previous post). If, like me, you escaped public horrors and attended a private high school of significant academic standing, when you get to college, you will notice this. People who, by all rights should know more than you, don't. You'll notice something else, too: not only are they surprisingly ignorant, but they are ignorant to the fact that they are ignorant. That last sentance would probably be a Bavarian mind fuck for them. So, you can probably guess where I'm going: what annoyed me was not their ignorance (for it is not their fault), but their refusal to acknowledge it. I've run into many a honor student who thinks he or she is hot shit. In reality, they are a pile of academic excrement, but not the hot or favorable kind. In short, you've met a know-it-all who is clearly wrong in a number of situations, yet refuses to admit it. And as any good engineering class will teach you, in order to fix a problem, you have to know it exists (we are presuming hidden markov models are beyond them). This kind of situation drives me nuts. At one point, I found myself in a introductory psychology class. Students regularly raised their hands and repeated what the professor just said - so they could feel smart, and seem like they understood the class and knew enough to participate. The sad thing was, because it was a big lecture, we weren't being graded on participation. If the fruity, magazine-style textbook wasn't enough to make me wary of the class, the fact that some students seemed to have difficulty with the concept of the scientific method should have finished the task. Up until now, I have just stewed and been annoyed at these people. But from this point on, I intend to let them know where they really stand in life. It's time to kick some academic ass. Side note. This just popped into my head, and I have to mention it: I just know, that after the $3.34 million invested in Michael Jackson joke R&D, he'll be proved undoubtedly innocent. That's the way the irony of the world works. Please leave the guy alone. |
